There is always a dichotomy that many avid travelers feel when they are on the road and when they return back home. While on the road they undoubtedly miss their friends and family back home. Sometimes they long for them so much, it makes them wonder if all the traveling is worth it. When they arrive home, it is a wonderful feeling. As they say there truly is no place like home, however the eternal nomads always have that nagging feeling when they stay home for too long, the feeling that urges them to get back on the road.

Missing home and your friends and family is a natural part of being on the road. If you figure out a way to keep in contact with them, it will make your experience easier and more enjoyable. It's so easy to do now. All you have to do is find an internet connection and you are on your way to contacting all the people you left behind.

Programs such as Skype and Google Voice allow travelers to speak to and even see the people they have left behind. These programs are very inexpensive, although Google Voice requires an invitation. Many more companies are following Skype's coattails such as Gizmocall.com, which requires a computer or web-enabled phone. Also Voxox, a San Diego based company, offers a software that allows you to send a text to the number you want to dial, and seconds later you receive a phone call.

The founders of Skype are carrying out a lawsuit against Ebay, who bought the license for Skype. Although Ebay may have the license, they do not have the rights for the code that allows Skype to run. Without the rights to the code, Ebay may be forced to change the system completely. Who knows where this leaves Skype in the future, but for now travelers have no need to worry. There are many new companies coming out of the woodwork, all striving to provide a similar service to Skype, which means easy and cheap ways for travelers to keep in touch.

While many may argue that the whole point of traveling is to get away and distance yourself from the place you left behind, many others need to keep in contact. Those of us who travel for a living, travel frequently, or are traveling long term don't want to turn our back completely on what we left behind.
